Building Everyday Acceptance At The Movie Theater

Do’s

  • Do assume there is a good reason…sensory overload and not misbehavior

  • If your child is curious or confused, do help them by explaining “some people experience the world differently”

  • Do accept that inclusion is not about tolerance it’s about understanding

Don’ts

  • Don’t escalate by hushing them harshley or demanding they sit down.

  • Don’t complain immediately to staff

  • Don’t assume caregiver isn’t trying. They might be trying to balance safety, sensory needs and emotional regulation.

You’ve sat down to enjoy a new movie at your local theater and before the movie even starts you see a young boy three aisles down covering his ears and pacing up and down the aisle…
