Building Everyday Acceptance At A Birthday Party
Do’s
Do understand the inclusion means making room - not making someone change.
Do model acceptance for other children at the party. If asked, answer “she enjoys playing this way”.
Do respect her play and go about as you would normally at any birthday party.
Don’ts
Don’t try to force group participation.
Don’t label or think of the behavior as weird
Don’t assume she’s unhappy. Many children on the spectrum experience joy through repetition, order and predictability
You’ve taken your daughter to her classmates’s birthday party and you notice a young girl sitting off in the corner playing with blocks by herself…
